Shawna is an Iowa native. With the support of her family, friends, and key role models at Iowa State University, she studied plants, birds, trees, and scientific drawing and painting. After graduating from Iowa State with a BA in Biological/Pre-Medical Illustration, she traveled to Patagonia, Chile to hunt rare primitive crane flies. Afterward, she earned her MA in Biological and Medical Illustration from the Department of Art as Applied to Medicine at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. There she studied human anatomy, pathology, medicine and tissue engineering as well as medical illustration and animation.
Shawna has collaborated with a variety of researchers, biologists, engineers and surgeons. She enjoys creating projects that contain engaging storytelling and are rich in detail. Past clients include Grayson Lab for Tissue Engineering, the Johns Hopkins Simulation Center, National Aquarium in Baltimore, the Iowa State University Insect Collection and many more. Shawna specializes in biological and medical illustration, 2D and 3D animation, and design. Specialties include cellular biology, vasculature, and entomology.
